SpaceX Falcon 9 Merlin RUD During Launch. Elon Musk’s Reaction…
In an unexpected situation, SpaceX Falcon 9 second stage engine just suffered a catastrophic in-flight failure during the Starlink launch, ending Falcon 9’s unprecedented streak of success.
What exactly happened?
How did SpaceX and Elon Musk explain this?
Find out everything in today’s episode of Techmap.

SpaceX’s seventieth orbital launch of the year should have been well if something hadn’t gone wrong.
SpaceX Falcon 9 Merlin RUD During Launch. Elon Musk’s Reaction…
Lifting off from Vandenberg Space Force Base Thursday night at 10:35 PM EDT, the SpaceX Falcon 9 mission namely Starlink 9-3 suffered the engine’s Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly, leaving 20 Starlink satellites in a perilously low orbit. During the burn of the Falcon 9’s second stage, an unusual amount of ice was seen building up around the Merlin Vacuum engine in camera views from the rocket.
This one might indicate a propellant leak. That’s just speculation, however; neither SpaceX nor Musk has said anything about the ice as of yet.
SpaceX founder Elon Musk said it was unclear if the spacecraft could be saved using onboard ion thrusters.
He said:
SpaceX Falcon 9 Merlin RUD During Launch. Elon Musk’s Reaction…
“Upper stage restart to raise perigee resulted in an engine RUD for reasons currently unknown. Team is reviewing data tonight to understand root cause. Starlink satellites were deployed, but the perigee may be too low for them to raise orbit. Will know more in a few hours,”
Perigee, in case you were wondering, is the point in an object’s orbit when it’s closest to Earth.
An hour after Musk’s post, SpaceX provided more details via the company’s X account.
“During tonight’s Falcon 9 launch of Starlink, the second-stage engine did not complete its second burn. As a result, the Starlink satellites were deployed into a lower-than-intended orbit. SpaceX has made contact with 5 of the satellites so far and is attempting to have them raise orbit using their ion thrusters,” the company wrote.
