The phrase ‘it doesn’t take a rocket scientist’ usually denotes the simplicity of a task. But it takes a rocket scientist to make a rocket – it’s one of the most challenging things you can do. An interstellar device that can escape earth’s gravity is no simple feat. But Elon Musk makes it even more difficult.
The visionary billionaire has undertaken building the largest and most powerful rocket known to humans; the Starship! So, Musk knew the task wouldn’t be easy from the onset. But he also knew he had no intentions of ever giving up on the dream.
Instead, during three years of developing and testing Starship, Elon Musk has continuously changed the materials, techniques, and design for every part of Starship to be better.
In today’s episode of the Alpha Tech channel, let’s find out how Elon musk has changed the design of the Starship Nosecone.
And what does this change mean for future Starship missions?
First, the nose cone is considered one of the most essential parts of an orbital rocket!
A nose cone is the conically shaped forward-most section of a rocket. It is designed to modulate oncoming airflow behaviors and minimize aerodynamic drag. Nose cones are also intended for submerged watercraft such as submarines, submersibles, and torpedoes, and in high-speed land vehicles such as rocket cars and velomobiles.
The first point that meets the air is the nose cone at the front end of the rocket. The amount of air resistance that opposes a rocket’s motion depends mainly on the nose cone’s shape, the rocket’s diameter, and the rocket’s speed.
Interestingly, Elon Musk revealed on Joe Rogan’s podcast that the British comedy film “The Dictator” was a source of inspiration for the Starship nosecone.
Musk said movies influenced him in creating outrageous designs. It’s not the first time Musk allowed a silly idea to influence his work, and it won’t be the last.
