SpaceX’s New WEIRD Starship V2 Header Tank Spotted, Naked Ship to be Scrapped???
Let’s take a look at the latest developments. SpaceX has unveiled a significant component of Starship V2: the new methane header tank. At the same time, the S26 prototype is undergoing major decommissioning steps, which may indicate the end of this unique prototype—or perhaps there’s more to the story. Meanwhile, another briefing on Starliner was held, though it offered little more than continued disappointment. With these updates, there’s much to discuss on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Starship is truly entering a new era. In the past month alone, we’ve seen the unveiling of several key components, such as the Ship’s nosecone, payload door, and booster forward dome. Continuing this momentum, at 11:23 a.m. CDT on August 14, SpaceX rolled out another critical V2 part—the methane header tank—from the Starfactory to the yard in front of the Assembly Bays. This marks the first public reveal of an internal component of Starship V2.

A notable detail on this tank is a label that caught immediate attention. The label indicates that this part carries Serial #02 and confirms that it is the methane header tank for S34, the second V2 prototype. The label also reveals that production of this part began in February of this year, with completion slated for December 2024, suggesting it will be installed on the Ship by year-end. This development is a significant step toward SpaceX’s ambitious goal of producing six V2 Starships this year.
The design of this methane header tank shows some significant changes from the previous version. Most notably, the head of the fuel line has undergone a redesign. In the current version, the fuel line is straight, directing fuel through the LOX main tank and connecting directly to the engines. However, in V2, the fuel line is designed to be offset to one side, signaling a shift in engineering approach.

As a result of this redesign, the methane header tank is almost certain to be relocated to the nosecone area, alongside the already positioned LOX header tank. Similar to the LOX header tank, the offset pipe will enable SpaceX to build a fuel line on one side of the Ship, which can then connect down to the common fuel line and ultimately to the engine. This configuration is expected to streamline the arrangement by placing similar components in the same location. Additionally, moving the methane header tank to the nosecone will likely help increase the weight in that area, contributing to better mass balance between the nosecone and the sections below.
