SpaceX’s Orbital Launch Mount Is About To Be Tested!

SpaceX has been working around the clock upgrading the rocket, rebuilding the launch pad, and defending itself against an environmental lawsuit as the launch company gets ready for its second orbital attempt. This work began over three months ago, following Starship’s maiden orbital flight test. And now, the newly upgraded orbital launch mount is about to be tested for the first time. Will it stand the force of the powerful Booster 9? Let’s find out in today’s episode!

Prior to a Static Fire test, which will also be used to assess improvements to the launch pad of Starship, Booster 9 has arrived at the Orbital Launch Site. The campaign leading up to the second flight of the most powerful rocket in the world has reached a significant turning point with that rollout.

While improvements at the Starbase production site are still in full flow, SpaceX has also begun the test campaign for Starship’s second flight.

Launchpad Upgrades Installed and Tested

In order to conduct its second OFT, SpaceX will utilize Booster 9 and Starship 25. Starship has undergone more than 1,000 changes since its initial flight, including important upgrades to the thrust vector controls, staging, liftoff, and flight termination system.

Electric thrust vector controls will replace the hydraulic system in Booster 9, which is going electric. Cascading Raptor failures, in which one malfunction set off another, were the main problem in the initial flight. The engines can be more independently controlled with electric controls.

Hot staging: Prior to turning off all of its booster engines, SpaceX will ignite its upper stage engines. Hot staging makes sure that there is constant thrust during the ascent, which is intended to 10% boost payload capacity.

Increased shielding and the addition of a venting ring between the two stages are two ways that SpaceX will prevent damage to the booster.

Liftoff: In the first test flight, SpaceX progressively increased Raptor thrust on the launch pad, which made Starship take off about ten seconds later than expected. To prevent pad damage in the second test, SpaceX plans to accelerate the throttle up.

The major unknown: Elon stated on a post-launch call that the long lead item would be the recertification of its termination system, which took 40 seconds from initiation to explode Starship. At the Massey test facility in Texas, SpaceX has tested its updated FTS on a booster, however no information on the certification schedule has been provided.
Installing the water-cooled steel plate system that will be employed beginning with the next Starship flight has moved along quickly for SpaceX in recent weeks.

The water supply manifolds for the system were put in place not long after the main central plate, which had been erected a few weeks earlier. Three of the system’s six sides are connected to these manifolds, while the remaining three are closed off. The central plate of the system has all six sides.

On the south and western edges of the central plate beneath the orbital launch mount (OLM), there are three manifolds. To connect these to the ground storage tanks that are situated on the opposite side of the Starship launch tower, pipelines were also laid down immediately after these were placed.
