2. SOUNDBITE (English) Phil Jobson, Santa Rosa, California resident:
“There was a little confusion at first because they’d held the.. they’d held the countdown, and the coverage went blank. And then all of a sudden, kaboom, Right. And, you know, you couldn’t hear it, but you could see the plume and the super heavy booster just kind of hung there and hung there for a really long time. I expected it to fall over and explode, but it didn’t. And then it emerged. And about that time you got the sound and it was just a crackle like, I don’t know, I’ve seen a lot of launches. That was a hell of a crackle, so.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Riley Veteto, Austin, Texas resident:
“Hey. Yeah, it blew up, but hey, I got to.. it blew up in visual range. Which is, you know, hey, that’s bad. But it’s also great. I got to actually see the whole flight.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Powell, Dallas, Texas resident:
“I’d like to someday like I did in 19, was it 1968 or 69? I was eight/nine years old. And I sat in Colorado and watched them walk on the moon. So how much fun will that be before I die? To watch them walk on Mars, for instance.”

STORYLINE:
SpaceX’s giant new rocket exploded minutes after blasting off on its first test flight and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Elon Musk’s company was aiming Thursday to send Starship on a round-the-world trip from the southern tip of Texas, near the Mexican border.

The biggest and most powerful rocket ever built carried no people or satellites.

SpaceX plans to use Starship to send people and cargo to the moon and, ultimately, Mars.

A stuck valve scrapped Monday’s try.

Throngs of spectators watched from several miles away from the Boca Chica Beach launch site, which was off-limits.
