Wow wow, SpaceX has overcome a new challenge!
In fact, SpaceX is already testing tech that could strengthen the ground beneath its giant Starship rocket’s orbital launch pad.
Luckily, when the steam clears at the end of the clip, the plate is still in one piece — no mere feat, considering what it was up against.
Obviously, this is only one Raptor engine, not 33. However, it’s important to consider the additional surface area and size of a full water-cooled steel plate, as well as the distance and the test footage. Based on the size of the Raptor engine, it appears that the steel plate is approximately 7 meters away from the engine.
This distance is much closer than the space between the top of the orbital launch mount and the ground, where a full-scale platform will be installed. In reality, the distance will be about twice as long, close to 15 meters, taking all factors into account. Considering these circumstances, this test is quite impressive and must be instilling confidence in SpaceX.
At the same time, the progress being made at Boca Chica also indicates that the company is moving forward.
