The newest Tesla factory, located in Austin, Texas, was officially opened at the start of April. The updated Model Y with 4680 cells and a structural battery pack also began receiving its first deliveries at the Giga Texas launch celebration, according to the electric vehicle manufacturer.
The new 4680 cells and structural battery pack architecture are anticipated to extend vehicle range by up to 54% while reducing weight and enhancing performance, according to Tesla’s Battery Day presentation.
Tesla announced a new, tab-less 4680 cell form factor when it unveiled its battery cells at the Battery Day event in 2020. This form factor would increase energy density, maintain similar thermal characteristics of smaller cells, improve power-to-weight ratio, streamline manufacturing, and reduce cost.
Tesla did not reveal the updated Model Y’s specifications at the Giga Texas opening event, and all of the cars at the time were given to Tesla employees. The Battery Day presentation claimed that the 4680 cells and structural battery pack architecture will extend vehicle range by up to 54%, reduce vehicle weight, boost acceleration, and be less expensive and more environmentally friendly to make.
For the first Tesla with 4680 cells and a structural pack, there was a lot of anticipation given Tesla’s lofty promise for the cells.
When sales of the updated Model Y with 4680 began last year, we anticipated that it would have a 475-mile EPA range and a 0 to 60 time under 3 seconds based on Elon Musk’s statements and Tesla’s Battery Day presentation.
Despite not yet publicly disclosing the updated Model Y’s specifications, we do know that the 4680 Model Y has a 279-mile EPA range, a 5-second 0 to 60 time, and a starting price of $59,990.
The 279-mile range was much less than anticipated for the updated Model Y, and some individuals have even come to the conclusion that Tesla’s Battery Day presentation was a complete fabrication.
Though the new Model Y is powered by 4680 cells and a structural pack, Tesla sent out a memo to staff a few days after it began shipping the 4680 Model Y outlining why it performs worse than the Model Y Long Range, which is powered by last generation 2170 cells, and has a shorter range.
Several questions remain unresolved despite Tesla’s reply. The size of the battery pack and the EPA efficiency ratings are a couple of the major ones.
There are currently a few contradicting claims regarding the battery pack’s size, claiming that the car either has a 50KWh pack or a 68KWh pack.
The Model Y Long Range with 2170 cells has an EPA efficiency rating higher than the Model Y 4680, which raises the second unresolved query. The Model Y Long Range gets a combined EPA MPGe (Miles Per Gallon equivalent) rating of 122 despite having less energy-efficient cells and a larger 330-mile EPA range.
This is nearly comparable to the EPA MPGe rating of 123 for the Model Y 4680. The 4680 Model Y was anticipated to be substantially more effective due to the improved cells and shorter range.
Until now, no one has been able to definitively respond to the two questions above, but fortunately for us, it appears like we won’t have to wait long to find out the inner workings of the updated Model Y.
