Elon Musk’s Starship Super Heavy Launch COUNTDOWN Begins!
According to a planning notice published on Tuesday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a major SpaceX Starship Super Heavy rocket launch test may take place the following week. The launch is anticipated to take place on April 10, according to the FAA notice, which also specified April 11 and April 12 as backup dates. For what is anticipated to be its first orbital flight test from Boca Chica, Texas, the rocket and satellite company run by billionaire Elon Musk, SpaceX, still needs to obtain a launch permit. The first full-scale launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket, currently anticipated for later this month, received its strongest signs yet that the company is getting close.
A launch rehearsal for the vehicle, which is currently fully loaded on the launch pad at the company’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, was announced through Twitter on April 6 by the company. The first launch attempt will come a week later after that.
Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of SpaceX, later tweeted unexpectedly that the vehicle is “ready to launch next week,” but neither the company nor the Federal Aviation Administration appear to be organizing a launch for the week of April 10. The FAA specifies an initial launch date of April 17 for the Starship flight along with backup launch dates of April 18 through April 21 in an Operations Plan Advisory document that is used to support flight planning. The same timeframe, from 8 to 11:05 a.m., applies to all dates. Eastern time.
There was talk that SpaceX will try to launch Starship earlier. A marine warning notice proposed a launch between April 6 and April 12, while an earlier this week released FAA planning document specified a launch on April 10 with backup dates of April 11 and April 12.
Both the vehicle’s technical preparedness and the FAA’s granting of a launch license are necessary for those plans to go through. The FAA stated the inclusion of the Starship dates on its planning documents did not mean a launch license has been obtained, and SpaceX and Musk both highlighted that such timetables were requiring “regulatory approval.”
The Super Heavy booster underwent a static-fire test on February 9 which served as the final significant testing milestone before the launch. The corporation declared the test a success even though only 31 of the booster’s 33 Raptor engines actually fired. The static-fire test was the “last box to check” prior to launch, which Gary Henry, senior advisor for national security space solutions at SpaceX, stated would happen “in the next month or so,” according to his estimate at the time. He made this statement at a conference on February 21.
In a panel discussion on March 15 at the Satellite 2023 conference, SpaceX’s senior vice president of commercial business, Tom Ochinero, remarked, “We’re so close” to that launch. We can’t reveal our launch date until we receive our FAA license, so we’re waiting.
